Feature News in Africa:

In the past I have looked to Africa for presentation and paper topics. Once again I find myself intrigued with the events happening there. Now more than ever I think it is important that young people are aware with things happening around the world whether it be how they are battling Covid-19 or major government decisions. For my feature news stories I turned to CGTN Africa which does online coverage of major events across Africa.

On Saturday October 10 the African Union announced their plan to launch a 300 million dollar fundraiser that will aid in Covid-19 recovery. The fundraisers will be a webinar that will be hosted with the AU and the Afrexim Bank and will take place on October 24th. The Pan African bloc released a statement "Expected to inform and solicit support and contributions from the African private sector, public and other partners, in order to ensure that the continent can respond effectively to this unprecedented global crisis." The continent wide fundraiser for the anti-Covid-19 initiative has already raised over 44 million dollars. However, they are still encouraging for citizens across Africa to donate to the cause and reach their new goal. The African Union said the goals of this initiative is to mitigate the social, economic, and humanitarian impacts left by Covid-19. The program will be 2 hours long and is expected to be joined by the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa and many other African leaders. As of Saturday there are a total of 1,622,455 confirmed cases across the continent of Africa according to the CDC.

On October 19 Cameroonian troops were able to rescue a French national that was kidnapped at a beachfront resort in Kribi while being held at gunpoint. The town is actually known to be a hot spot for tourist and supposedly this is a 'rare occurrence' as assured by many. The commander of Cameroon's Elite Force Rapid Intervention Battalion, Joseph Konaka told multiple reporters "The French national identified as Patrice Porte, a CEO of a private enterprise was kidnapped on Sunday, while he was driving." When the troops were able to locate and recover the hostage the kidnappers fled from the scene. Konaka said they would continue into the investigation to identify the kidnappers. A prefect of the Ocean Division, Antoine Bisaga stated "The situation is under control. Security has been beefed up and people should go about their activities without fear." Shortly after he was recovered Porte was reunited with his family that same Monday.
